This work aims at collecting and evaluating the works of Mohammad ‘Abdel Wahab for Umm Kulthum through transcription and analysis.
It includes an explanation of the methods and approaches employed, and the bases for the analysis. It is divided into two parts: the first part includes analysis of the songs, statistical tables, and definitions.
The second part includes the musical notation, maqāmāt, ajnās and rhythms. One who has studied Arabic and international music theory may find sonic evidence and examples of most of the basics of musical language, the ajnās and maqāmāt, as well small rhythms which are fairly different from the muwashshahāt rhythms.
The content of the song analyses may be condensed for use in the practice of music appreciation, and in this way the book may reach the professional, the hobbyist and the connoisseur.
This work is not meant for reading, rather it is intended for deep and sustained study. It includes and analysis section and a practical section, referring to the song transcriptions. By necessity, we have devised a way of writing out musical notation structurally. First, because it was necessary to translate the musical notation into number, terms and structural formulas. Second, to avoid repeating the transcription of the work a second time.
