The expressions collected in this book are largely metaphorical. Most of them are fixed in form or invariable in a way that makes them different from literal expressions and the majority belong to informal spoken Arabic rather than formal written Arabic.

The metaphorical meaning of some idioms is easier to understand when historical back grounds have been found.
